Long, HOT hike up the west side of Kaena point. You can access the point from the Dillingham side or Waianae side. I had planned Dillingham, but traffic looked HORRID, so I opted for the quick trip out west. Ok, so it took 45 minutes to get there too. Worth it though :-).
The video.....short and sweet...unlike this hike :D.
The Hawaiian Monk Seal. These animals are federally protected and it's against the law to harm or disturb them. You should stay at least 150 feet away, for your safety and theirs. And if I see you harming one, I will beat you with my monopod...in a loving, Christian manner, of course.
Having said that, I was panning the area with my camera trying to find a seal out on the rocks. I panned back closer and he literally did a belly flop about 25 feet from me. He (or she I suppose) then just stared at me, pretty much begging me to take a few pics. I didn't want to disappoint so there ya have it. It was over in a matter of maybe 45 seconds. He went his way. I went mine.
FMF (Fat-Man-Factor)(FMF is a difficulty scale from 1-10, from an out of shape, fat, white guy's point of view):2/3 Probably the easiest hike on the island. Even though it's 6 miles, it's 99% flat. As you see above, it took me 3 hours, but I stopped and took quite a few pics and walked around at the point for probably 45 minutes before finally seeing a seal. Lots of people running this trail on the way back.
